AQUARIST VOLUNTEER

Aquarist volunteers assist with husbandry-related duties mostly including regular feedings of our resident marine animals. This position requires someone who has a passion for ocean conservation and environmental stewardship. Some experience is necessary.

Time Commitment: 9 months to 1 year
                                 2-3 hours per day, one day per week

Age Requirement: 18 years or older

Volunteer Description:

Ideally, aquarist volunteers will have an interest in marine science and conservation, basic knowledge about Southern California marine ecology, and some experience with life support systems. Main feeding responsibilities include preparing food (squid, shrimp), quantity monitoring, and target feeding. Additional duties involve monitoring water quality (temperature, water levels), wiping down tanks, and algae and salt build-up removal.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Ability to lift at least 40 lbs

  • Ability to climb ladders for feeding

  • Willingness to get wet and muddy

  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team

  • Ability to take initiative and be reliable

  • Ability to follow directions carefully

  • Interest and willingness to work with and handle marine animals

  • Enthusiasm and passion for environmental conservation and preservation

  • Basic knowledge of Southern California marine life preferred

  • Experience with husbandry a plus

  • Marine science background preferred
