Native Plants

California Buckwheat

For plants to survive, they need sunshine, water, and good soil.  Sage scrub plant communities are adapted to live in places like Southern California which has a small amount of seasonal rain and lots of sunlight.  As a result, these plants grow and flower with winter rains and become dormant in the summer and fall as they wait for water.  California Coastal Sagebrush (Artemisia californica) is crucial to mammals and birds since they seed later in the season than most local plants, providing a necessary food source when food is scarce.
