CA Biodiversity Day

INaturalist Bioblitz in the Bay! September  2021

California Biodiversity Day is an annual event created to celebrate the state’s exceptional biodiversity and encourage actions to protect it. Although many public events may not be possible due to COVID-19, holding a bioblitz presents an opportunity to explore the Upper Newport Ecological Reserve while maintaining social distances!

Bioblitz events allow you and other citizen scientists to collect information about the biodiversity in a given area. Anyone can be a citizen scientist with the right tools! The iNaturalist app is a popular nature app that helps identify plants and animals around you, created by a collaboration with National Geographic and the California Academy of Sciences.

To take part in our bioblitz follow these simple steps: Download the iNaturalist app on your smart device, create a personal profile, join our Bioblitz project, and come to the Upper Newport Bay on the day of the Event. When you join the project and  are within the Ecological Reserve's boundaries during the scheduled day and time, any photos you take of plants or animals with the app will automatically be added to our Bioblitz project!
